That’s how my story ends. With the loss of everyone I have ever loved. With me in a big, beautiful Upper East Side apartment, missing everyone who ever meant anything to me. When you write the ending Monique, make sure it’s clear that I don’t love this apartment, that I don’t care about all my money, that I don’t give a rat’s ass if people think I’m a legend, that the adoration of millions of people never warmed my bed.

When you write the ending Monique, tell everyone that it is the people I miss. Tell everyone that I got it all wrong. That I chose the wrong things most of the time.

Excerpt from The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid page 344

Taylor Jenkins sets the book to tell the story of a movie actress set in 1950 Hollywood. Evelyn Hugo, the protagonist, sets out to be the greatest movie actress after the passing of her mother. Raised in an abusive home, Evelyn uses her beauty and endowment to earn favor that ultimately leaves her at the foot of Beverly Hills. Married to seven husbands and one-time winner of the Grammy Awards, Evelyn Hugo’s dramatic life has been awash in the media for years.

In a reflection of the past, an older Evelyn Hugo narrates her version of events in the form of a confession to writer Monique, working for a huge magazine in the current day. The book explores Evelyn’s younger self emphasizing themes of fame and power; manipulation and love to mention but a few. Her realization that she made all the wrong choices in choosing money, when in essence she should have been surrounded by those she loved.

Taylor’s style of writing will have you gripped on this book. The anticipation to know why Evelyn chose Monique, a novice in the writing industry to publish the biography that would later earn her millions, had me on the edge the whole time.

I loved the lessons from the recurring theme of Fame and Power versus Family.
